About the Book
Lawrence Loman is a bright, caring, curious boy with a gift for painting. He lives at home with his mother and younger brother, and the future is laid out before him, full of promise. But when he is ten, an experience of betrayal takes it all away, and Lawrence is left to deal with the devastating aftermath.
As he grows into a man, how will he make sense of what he has suffered? He cannot rewrite history, but must he be condemned to repeat it?
Lawrence finds meaning in the best way he knows how. By surrendering himself to art and nature, he creates beauty - beauty made all the more astonishing and soulful for the deprivation that gives rise to it.
Set in a fictional town in Victoria’s Southern Grampians region, this extraordinary novel is rich in colour and character, and incandescent with love and compassion.
The power and virtuosity of Laguna's writing ensures that Lawrence is seen: and by being seen, he is redeemed.
Praise
"I took a deep breath after reading the conclusion. Tears slid down my cheeks and I pondered for a very long time on the beauty of writing on such a deep, dark, and emotive piece. Where Laguna drew inspiration from. Her impeccable writing. The ability to understand, to want to know what happens to Lawrence and watch how childhood trauma plays out into adulthood. The lightness in Laguna’s ability to depict such a heavy subject and paint such beauty in incredible. Only a master writer could realise this piece. It is dark, it is deep and it is exceptional. I have no doubt that Laguna will win awards for this one." - Dean, Better Read Than Dead.
